Children and young people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds benefit from care that respects and reflects who they are. NSW needs carers from many cultural and language backgrounds to help children maintain strong connections to their culture, religion, language and community.
Our aim is to honour and uphold the culture and heritage of children and young people in out-of-home care. Wherever possible, children from CALD backgrounds are supported to live with carers who share, understand or actively respect their cultural identity.
To support carers of CALD children, we offer access to:
- ongoing training and culturally informed resources
- information about translation and interpreter services*
- guidance on finding foster care agencies that can provide culturally appropriate support

If you do not share the same cultural background as a child in your care, you can still play an important role in supporting their cultural identity. There are many ways carers can help children stay connected to their culture, language and heritage.
