The week began with a Foster and Kinship Care Week Picnic in Sydney on 31 August, bringing together around 1,000 carers, children, agencies and government representatives to celebrate the extraordinary contribution of foster carers, kinship carers, guardians and adoptive parents across New South Wales.

This week also marks the exciting announcement of the 2025 Carer Recognition Awards, with nominations opening Tuesday 2 September. These awards will honour the dedication, compassion and resilience of carers who go above and beyond to provide stability and support for children and young people.

Celebrations will continue throughout September and October across regional NSW, with a series of picnics supported by Carers for Kids NSW and foster care agencies. These community events will create more opportunities to recognise, connect and celebrate carers locally.

Carers for Kids NSW is proud to support and advocate for carers, recognising the vital role they play in giving children and young people positive futures.

CEO of Adopt Change, operators of Carers for Kids NSW Renée Leigh said, “Foster and kinship carers are the heart of our child protection system. Every day, they provide stability and opportunity for children and young people who need it most. This week is about shining a light on their invaluable role and saying a collective ‘thank you’. The Carer Recognition Awards are an important way of celebrating and acknowledging carers’ extraordinary commitment, and we look forward to seeing nominations from across the state.”

The annual Foster and Kinship Care Week launches this Sunday to celebrate and thank foster and kinship carers across the state. But with 15,223 children living in out-of-home care in NSW, more safe homes are needed.

Foster and Kinship Care Week 2023 runs from Sunday 10 – Saturday 16 September and honours the extraordinary work foster, relative and kinship carers, guardians and adoptive parents do across NSW to bring stability to the children and young people in their care. Carers and their families are coming together to mark the occasion at Foster and Kinship Care Week Picnics in various locations around the state.

Established in 1990, Foster and Kinship Care Week also raises awareness of the need for more carers. With over 15,000 children in NSW unable to live safely with their family, finding more safe and nurturing homes is a key.

NSW Minister for Families and Communities the Hon. Kate Washington MP says, “Every day, dedicated foster and kinship carers are making a difference to the lives of thousands of children and young people across the state. When vulnerable children need security and stability, foster and kinship carers step up to help them see brighter futures. There can be no greater investment in our future, than giving a child a loving and safe place to call home.”

My Forever Family NSW supports, trains and advocates for foster and kinship carers, guardians and adoptive parents from out-of-home care who bring stability to the lives of children and young people.

Renée Carter, CEO of Adopt Change operating the My Forever Family NSW program says, “We are honoured to be celebrating the incredible carer families in NSW who step up and provide safe, nurturing homes for children. Carers play a crucial role in providing security and warmth to a child when they are at their most vulnerable. During Foster and Kinship Care Week celebrations, we’d love to see more community members who are considering becoming a carer to reach out and take the next steps. There are different types of care to suit your availability. You could be the special carer to make a difference in a child’s life through providing the stability that comes from having a safe place to sleep, space to play and support to learn.”

Children in NSW require carers for all types of care, from part-time and emergency care through to long term care options. Families come in all shapes and sizes, and there are different types of care to suit individual and family circumstances. Every carer home has the unique opportunity to make a lasting, positive difference to a young person’s life.

Sam is a single parent and has recently become a part-time carer. She sees it as an opportunity for her daughter to connect with other kids and a way to support children in her community, and says, “As a part-time carer I’m able to show a child that there are other safe places for them, and there are people who care about them.”

Nes is a long-term carer for 8-year-old Toby*, and she relishes her role, encouraging others to consider opening up their homes and hearts to a young person. She says, “I’m very lucky to be a part of such an amazing thing we are doing. Fostering isn’t a job; it’s giving a life to those young children who haven’t had a chance to see how beautiful the world is.”

Registrations are open for the Sydney Foster and Kinship Carer Week Picnic in Penrith on Sunday 10 September. To find out more about the picnics and register visit https://www.myforeverfamily.org.au/events/

My Forever Family NSW supports, trains and advocates for foster and kinship carers, guardians and adoptive parents who bring stability to the lives of children and young people in care. There remains a critical shortage of carers in the Hunter and New England area and more than 15,000 children living in out-of-home care in the state of NSW.

My Forever Family NSW is calling on Hunter Region residents to consider opening their homes and their hearts to children in need by attending a free ‘Becoming a Carer for Kids Information Session’ on 6 March from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at Club Maitland City.

The session will raise awareness about the critical need for more people to care for children currently living in the state care system, and anyone who is interested in finding out what’s involved in opening their home to a child is welcome to come along.

The latest Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) NSW data shows that 2,016 children – an alarming 13.7% of all children and young people in the Hunter Region – are in out-of-home care, one of the highest percentages among DCJ districts.

The session will raise urgent need for carers for sibling groups in the region, to ensure that siblings in care can stay together and thrive.

Becoming a carer can be a life-changing experience, not only for the children but also for the carers themselves. Whether you’re single, a couple, or an empty nester with room to spare, the journey provides a unique opportunity to make a lasting difference in a child’s life.

Experienced carer Brydie has formed strong bonds with children she’s cared for and is passionate about keeping siblings together, “we provided care for 2-year-old twin girls that needed a home. It’s a daunting experience for a child when you’re in this situation where you don’t have a lot of control over your life and meeting strangers. That’s why that sibling relationship is so important, especially for children in out-of-home care.

“The sibling bond is a constant in their life and provides familiarity and comfort. It’s been so rewarding to help nurture that relationship and watch them laugh and share joy together.”

The in-person session will provide practical advice on the different types of care available, including emergency, respite and long-term care. Attendees will also learn about the support and training available to carers throughout their journey.

“We know there are people in the Hunter who have the compassion and stability to provide a safe and nurturing home for children who need it most,” said My Forever Family NSW Spokesperson, Michelle Stacpoole.

“This information session is a great way to learn more about becoming a carer for children, ask questions and hear from those who have already made the journey.”

If you’ve ever thought about becoming a carer, now is the time to take the next step. Join My Forever Family NSW and discover how you can help change a child’s life for the better.

Right now, there are children in the community who need a safe place to call home. Part-time carers play an important role in the community and become a part of a child’s extended support network. To find and inform potential new part-time carers in the Armidale region, My Forever Family NSW will hold a free Becoming a Carer for Kids Information Session for local residents on Tuesday 20th June from 5:30pm-7pm at Armidale Ex Services Memorial Club. Part-time or respite carers provide a secure home for children and young people for short periods of time such as weekends, once a month or during school holidays.

The Department of Communities and Justice NSW data for 2021 shows that 952 children and young people are living in out-of-home care in Armidale and New England region, making up 6% of all children and young people in out-of-home care. These are children and young people who can’t live safely with their family and need a safe and nurturing place to call home.

For many carers, part-time care allows them to support children and young people living in the out-of-home care system while balancing the demands of other commitments and lifestyles.

Carer Shauna is passionate about providing a secure home for children and young people in whatever capacity she can and is grateful to part-time carers with whom she forms a community of support for young people with.

“Everyone says oh I couldn’t do that, but I really think that more of us could. Maybe in a different capacity to the way I do it. A lot more people could step in even if it was part-time care, or sometimes just helping a carer when they first get a little person. I’ve got wonderful friends who say what do you need? Reach out instead of being afraid that it’s too hard.”

While there will be a focus on information about part-time care for children and young people in the local community, there are many different types of care options available to suit individual and family circumstances, all of which will be covered.

My Forever Family NSW Spokesperson, Michelle Stacpoole talks about the significance of the program for the local community and the urgent need for carers.

“Being a carer for kids is not a one size fits all. There are many ways you can help children thrive. These sessions are an opportunity to ask questions about becoming a carer in an open and relaxed setting, and to chat directly with those who have lived experience as carers. It’s a chance for people to considering becoming carers now to understand the next steps and we also welcome people who are considering this option for the future to come along and find out more.”

My Forever Family NSW supports, trains and advocates for foster and kinship carers, guardians and adoptive parents who bring stability to the lives of children and young people in care. With 15,223 children living in the out-of-home care system across the state, more carer homes are needed, particularly in the Sydney district.

Right now, there are children in the community who need a safe place to call home. Part-time carers play an important role in the community and become a part of a child’s extended support network. To find and inform potential new part-time carers in Sydney, My Forever Family NSW will hold a free Becoming a Carer for Kids Information Session for locals on Thursday 22nd June from 5:30pm-7pm at Marrickville District Lawn Tennis Club. Part-time or respite carers provide a secure home for children and young people for short periods of time such as weekends, once a month or during school holidays.

The Department of Communities and Justice NSW data for 2021 shows that 474 children and young people are living in out-of-home care in the Sydney district. Compared with 30 June 2020, this is an increase of 4.6% in the region.

“Everyone says oh I couldn’t do that, but I really think that more of us could… A lot more people could step in even if it was part-time care, or sometimes just helping a carer when they first get a little person.

There remains a critical shortage of carers in Hunter and Central Coast region with children as young as six in urgent need of a safe and nurturing home.

My Forever Family NSW is calling on the community to come together and help find safe and nurturing
homes in Newcastle for the following kids so they can remain in the region and stay connected to their
friends, school and support networks within the Newcastle area.

Aaron* and his twin sister Eliza* are six. Aaron loves building things, swimming and going to the park. Eliza loves dress-ups, dancing and pets. They will respond well to routine and need carers to provide a home with stability and consistency.

Jacob* is 14 and enjoys playing footy and riding his bike. He needs a home with carers who have an
understanding of young people with disabilities and who can provide an inclusive home where they enjoy sharing a silly joke or two.

Daisy* and her brother Jay* are ten and their sister Krystal* is 15. They love the outdoors and enjoy going bush-walking and swimming. They need a nurturing home that can support them to be confident and learn new skills.

Amelia* is nine and loves to bake. She also enjoys swimming at the beach, riding her bike and reading. She needs a home with a patient carer who can spend time with her.

The children in the community come from a range of cultural backgrounds and carers from Aboriginal and culturally diverse homes are welcomed. Renée Carter, CEO of Adopt Change operating the My Forever Family NSW program, is urging the community to open their homes and their hearts to these kids in need.

“We are asking people to urgently come together to find homes for children in their local community. We
cannot rest while we have little ones who don’t have a place to call home. Supporting children and teens to stay in their local area in a safe, nurturing home will not only help them thrive, but also allow them to stay connected with their school, friends and other familiarities which they very much need when everything else has changed for them. We need to do everything we can now to ensure a positive childhood and trajectory for our children,” says Ms Carter.

There remains a critical shortage of carers in the Byron and Norther NSW district and 15,895 children living in out-of-home care in the state of NSW. But not all children needing care are young, with call to people to consider caring for teenagers.

Not all children needing care are infants or young kids. Right now, there are teenagers in the community who need a safe place to call home. To find and inform potential new carers in Byron Bay region, My Forever Family NSW will hold a free Becoming a Carer for Teenagers Information Session for local residents on Thursday 18th May from 5:30pm-7pm at Byron Bay Services Club – 132 Jonson St, Byron Bay. The session will raise urgent need for carers for older children and teenagers in the Byron Bay region, to ensure that children in care can thrive and continue to form strong bonds with their families and community.

Anyone who has the time and skills to provide a safe place for a teenager, and understands what it’s like to navigate homework, sporting commitments and teen-related issues is encouraged to come along, to help support these young people in need.

Experienced carer Cameron has formed a strong bond with Ben* who came into his care at 12 years old. After decades of travelling in solitude Cameron has found himself relishing in homelife with Ben by his side, sharing in home maintenance projects, camping and fishing trips together and simple pleasures like walking the family dog – all things Cameron attributes to Ben being an older child in care.

“Just our day-to-day interactions are rewarding, going for a walk with the dog or going for a bike ride, it’s hard to put into words. He’s just so friendly and kind, he’s a beautiful boy…

Not all children needing care are infants or young kids. Right now, there are teenagers in the community who need a safe place to call home. To find and inform potential new carers in Murrumbidgee region, My Forever Family NSW will hold a free Becoming a Carer for Teenagers Information Session for locals on Thursday 11th May from 5:30pm-7pm at PCYC Albury. The session will raise urgent need for carers for older children and teenagers in the Murumbidgee and Albury region, to ensure that children in care can thrive and continue to form strong bonds with their families and community.

Anyone who has the time and skills to provide a safe place for a teenager, and understands what it’s like to navigate homework, sporting commitments and teen-related issues is encouraged to come along, to help support these young people in need.

The Department of Communities and Justice NSW data for 2020 shows that a staggering 12 children and young people per 1000 are living in out-of home care in the Murumbidgee region compared with nine in 1000 across the whole of NSW. These are children and young people who can’t live safely with their family and need a safe and nurturing place to call home.

Older carer Beth has formed a strong bond with Nikita* who came into her care, “I’m an older woman, I lost my husband eight years ago and I was left with a house with empty bedrooms. I thought there’s got to be a child that needs a bed. Not long after completing the foster carer training Nikita came into my life and I have found myself in a beautiful new season of life helping her achieve her goals.”

Beth describes Nikita as an inquisitive and bright young girl who has expressed a shared an interest in baking and gardening. “Being an older child, she is always curious about learning, and it gives me joy to share my knowledge of baking and gardening. We have been propagating succulents from the garden to put in her room. It’s not just care giving, I’m always sharing my knowledge with her, and she teaches me about her world as a young person. She’s been a blessing in disguise. The house isn’t empty anymore, it has noise and life in it. So, it sounds like a family home again.”

There are many different types of care options available to suit individual and family circumstances, all of which will be covered at the information session. The event will be an opportunity to ask questions of local agencies, be introduced to the services of My Forever Family NSW and hear the first-hand experiences of current carers.

My Forever Family NSW Spokesperson, Michelle Stacpoole talks about the significance of the program for the local community and the urgent need for carers.

“Being a carer for teenagers is not a one size fits all. There are many ways you can help teenagers thrive.

To find and inform potential new carers in Nepean Blue Mountains region, My Forever Family NSW will hold a free Becoming a Carer for Kids Information Session for local residents on Tuesday 14th March from 5:30pm-7pm at Penrith Bowling & Recreation. The session will raise awareness about the critical need for more people to care for children currently living in the state care system, and anyone who is interested in finding out what’s involved in opening their home to a child is welcome to come along.

The Department of Communities and Justice NSW data for 2020 shows that a staggering 20 children and young people per 1000 are living in out-of-home care in the Nepean Blue Mountains region compared with nine in 1000 across the whole of NSW. These are children and young people who can’t live safely with their family and need a safe and nurturing place to call home.

The session will raise urgent need for carers for sibling groups in the Nepean Blue Mountains region, to ensure that sibling in care can stay together and thrive.

The information session will inform potential carers of the different options of care available and will be an opportunity to ask questions of local agencies, be introduced to the services of My Forever Family NSW and hear the first-hand experiences of current carers.

Experienced carer Brydie has formed strong bonds with children she’s cared for and is passionate about
keeping siblings together.

“We provided care for 2-year-old twin girls that needed a home. It’s a daunting experience for a child when you’re in this situation where you don’t have a lot of control over your life and meeting strangers. That’s why that sibling relationship is so important, especially for children in out-of-home care. The sibling bond is a constant in their life and provides familiarity and comfort. It’s been so rewarding to help nurture that relationship and watch them laugh and share joy together.”
